Work Hours : Full-time ; 40 hours/week

BASIC FUNCTIONS
The Political Specialist seeks to strengthen the U. S. Embassy’s understanding of Burundi’s government, political parties, and civil society organizations, and their intersection with culture and current events. By undertaking original research and developing and maintaining a range of contacts at appropriate levels in government, political parties, and civil society, s/he ensures Embassy leadership and Department of State officials remain informed of how political developments in Burundi are and/or may impact U. S. government interests. The candidate takes initiative to facilitate cooperation between Burundian government and society and the U. S., proactively identifying opportunities for engagement in pursuit of U.S. interests.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS :
EDUCATION : The applicant must have a university degree in political science, government or economics.
EXPERIENCE:Minimum of five years’ experience working with the Government of Burundi, a political party, civil society organization, and/or private sector, with a thorough understanding of local protocols in government and the private sector. Must have a solid understanding of current local political and economic activity.
JOB KNOWLEDGE:Applicant must have a thorough working knowledge of the history, structure, and functioning of the Government of Burundi, its institutions and infrastructure, of the current and historical local and international political landscape and political parties and structure, and of the political elite. (These will be tested)
SKILLS AND ABILITIES : The candidate must be able to develop, organize, and analyze data, to determine trends, come to accurate conclusions that can be reported as required, and interact effectively with high-level contacts. Has effective verbal and written English skills. Has the ability to develop and maintain sources and contacts at many levels. Has the ability to use a computer and online resources for research.
